Wendy [f] Mila Kunis Wants To Be Batman And Here's Why It Could Work

Mila Kunis Wants To Be Batman And Here's Why It Could Work

MilaKunis has proved her salt as a badass action hero in The Book Of Eli while showing how deep her dedication to hardcore body transformation can be in Black Swan, and it looks like the actor has her sights set on one of the biggest superheroes in the biz.

In a hilarious Reddit AMA with the 33-year-old actor I stumbled across recently, Kunis spoke about how she would love to play the Caped Crusader and, while her answer was obviously tongue-in-cheek, I think it could genuinely work.

1. She Knows How To Put The Work In

One of the biggest questions running through fans' minds when it comes to superhero casting is "will they manage to develop the appropriate ripped physique?" In Mila Kunis's case, the answer to this question is a resounds YAS.

During her training for Black Swan, Mila showed incredibly dedication to her gruelling fitness regime including taking up smoking again to deal with the extreme calorie restrictions, despite the fact she had been through the challenge of giving up years before:

"I never watched what I ate [before]. It was one of those things, for the first time in my life, I got a food delivery service. And I’ll tell you this – I’m not promoting this at all – but I used to be a smoker, and so I smoked a lot of cigarettes and I ate a limited amount of calories."

Although it wasn't the sort of bulking body transformation that a superhero movie demands, Mila managed to reduce her 5"4" frame to just 95 lbs in just five

months as well as taking on intensive dance training. If she can get through this, she can do anything.

2. That Voice, Though

As soon as someone is cast in the esteemed role of #Batman, their ability to pull off the now infamous gravelly voice is immediately questioned by concerned fans.

If you listen to Kunis's signature husky tones in the trailer above, I think it's safe to say she's already got it covered.

3. A More Light-Hearted DCU

Synder's #DCU has been repeatedly criticized for being way too dark in tone, but Mila Kunis is hilarious. Mila slays it as a comic actor because she is just as chortle-charming in real life, much like, say, Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool.

Sure, Batman is never going to be a continuous wise-cracking character, but Kunis's knack for humor could make the brooding character slightly more human and

relatable.

4. She'd Rock That Costume

Batman's costume evolves for each person who wriggles into his cowl and you can bet Mila Kunis would be able to totally rock whatever Batsuit she ended up be

ing shoehorned into.

5. Batman Transcends Gender

But, "what would she be called?!" I hear you cry. Batman, obviously. Batman is a character so iconic that, as a concept, it transcends gender and, personally, I don't think it would be weird for Mila to be referred to as "Batman" when she is essentially embodying a concept with a history way beyond her own.

Don't get me wrong, I love Ben Affleck as Batman and know he is signed on as the character for years to come, but a girl can dream, right?

Wendy [f] The 4 Foods That Are Aging You — And What To Eat Instead

The 4 Foods That Are Aging You — And What To Eat Instead

While none of us can turn back the clock and prevent aging, it can be a much more pleasant experience if we make changes early on to prevent illnesses and deterioration. With that in mind, we spoke to internal medicine specialist Erika Schwartz ― who has focused on preventive medicine for decades with her patients of all ages ― about how our diet can affect the aging process.

“As you get older, inflammation becomes the biggest problem,” Schwartz said. “Inflammation creates aging and disease. An anti-inflammatory diet is the way to beat it.”

Research has linked many chronic diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes and more to inflammation. Simply put, Inflammation is your body’s response when your immune system is fighting off harmful things like certain bacteria and disease.

Read on below for Dr. Schwartz’s recommendations of four foods to avoid and four foods to incorporate into your diet.

Avoid: Alcohol

Your body might have been able to handle knocking back a few drinks when you were younger but as we get older, our bodies can’t handle alcohol as well. According to the NIH, your sensitivity to alcohol can increase with age, thanks to lower levels of water in the body. Schwartz says for older people, alcohol is akin to “pure poison.” As we get older, she explains, our liver’s ability to detoxify diminishes and alcohol only worsens that. Alcohol is also known to dehydrate the skin, so you might not look so pleasant the morning after you’ve had a few too many. If cutting it out altogether seems like too much, it’s certainly beneficial to start by cutting back.

Instead, try water with lemon. Starting your day with a glass of water and lemon can have numerous benefits. It can aid with digestion, which sometimes slows down as we get older. It helps you get hydrated first thing in the morning. Also, lemons contain vitamin C and antioxidants that can help protect your cells from damage.

Avoid: Processed foods

Healthy, “whole foods” like vegetables, fruits, and eggs, etc. are easier for the body to process and derive nutrients from, Schwartz says. With packaged, processed foods, your body doesn’t always know how to process them, especially when they contain ingredients that are added just to increase shelf-life but don’t have any nutrition value. Watch out especially for foods that are deep fried and high in trans and saturated fats as these can increase inflammation — that thing we’re trying to avoid. Many processed foods are also laden with sugar, meaning extra calories and more inflammation. Eating refined carbohydrates creates a spike in blood sugar, creating more inflammation throughout your body.

Instead, opt for healthy fats like avocados. They can improve your cholesterol, keep you feeling full with their fiber content and contain antioxidants. They’re also rich in carotenoids, which help to fight inflammation.

Avoid: Sugar substitutes

While it’s a good idea to limit your sugars, don’t think that means it’s time to reach for the sugar substitutes. These are artificial sweeteners, which are often found in foods touted as “sugar-free.” Schwartz says our bodies don’t know how to break down these chemicals and often they can cause unpleasant side effects when taken in large amounts that may include bloating, gas and a laxative effect. Another downside is that they are often much sweeter than sugar itself, meaning if you get too used to them, it might be difficult to switch back without using more sugar. Schwartz calls artificial sweeteners “toxins” that can cause inflammation in some people.

If you want to satisfy your sweet tooth, you might try yogurt and fruit, as yogurt is high in calcium, which helps prevent osteoporosis. Fruit, of course, is full of vitamin C and antioxidants.

Avoid: Dairy

Your lactase levels can drop with age, causing a degree of lactose intolerance. Lactase is the enzyme that helps your body digest dairy products. Intolerance can lead to inflammation.

Instead, eat more leafy green vegetables. Schwartz says these dark leafy greens are the perfect package of vitamins, nutrients and anti-inflammatory compounds. (P.S. If you’re cutting back on dairy, leafy greens are a good source of calcium.) These are also rich in antioxidants, which again, fight cell damage.

Jay Z Continues with Barneys Collection, Issues Statement

Jay Z is moving forward with his partnership with Barneys New York despite the controversy over allegations of racial profiling at the luxury retailer. The rap mogul has been pressured to cancel his “A New York Holiday” collection with the store after two African-American shoppers were wrongfully stopped by police in separate incidents after making expensive purchases.
Hov issued a statement on his Life and Times website announcing that he will continue his BNY SCC collection with 100 percent of the profits going to the Shawn Carter Foundation. The statement reads:

"In the past several weeks two separate investigations were launched as a result of the wrongful detention of Trayon Christian and Kayla Phillips. My team has been privy to the status of the Barneys third party consultant investigation. In continuing our research, we also contacted the New York State Attorney General’s office for the status of their investigation into both Barneys and Macy’s. Those findings are not yet available.
While I await the findings of the Attorney General’s Office, I have agreed to move forward with the launch of BNY SCC collection under the condition that I have a leadership role and seat on a council specifically convened to deal with the issue of racial profiling. I am in a unique position to use my voice to affect change to this disturbing issue. The easy position would have been to walk away and leave policy making to others hoping that someone addresses the problem. I will not leave the outcome to others. I will take this into my own hands with full power to recommend, review and revise policies and guidelines moving forward. I am choosing to take this head on.
As I previously stated, the collaboration with Barneys has always been about giving and The Shawn Carter Foundation. From this collection, the Foundation will receive not only 25% of sales, it will now receive the additional 75% of Barneys’ sales, totalling 100% of all sales from BNY SCC. Along with 100% of sales from the collaboration, the Foundation will receive an additional 10% of all retail sales from Barneys New York stores nationwide and Barneys.com on November 20th. — Shawn “JAY Z” Carter
An investigation by the state attorney general’s office is currently “ongoing and active,” said a spokeswoman Friday (Nov. 15).
Jay Z’s “A New York Holiday” collection will launch on Nov. 20 at Barneys New York.

Wendy [f] Katy Perry Calls Out Female Pop Stars Who Show Too Much Skin.

Katy Perry Calls Out Female Pop Stars Who Show Too Much Skin.

First Katy Perry declared that she's getting too old to wear super-revealing costumes, and now, she's rooting for fellow pop stars to button up a bit, too. Sitting down to promote her new album, Prism, on NPR this week, Katy talked about how she think she's become an "inspiration out of default right now, 'cause it's such a strange world."

She explained, "Like females in pop -- everybody's getting naked. I mean, I've been naked before, but I don't feel like I have to always get naked to be noticed." Whaaaat? It's possible to be noticed without stripping down to a twerkin' teddy?! You don't say, Katy!

when asked if she was referencing anyone specifically, she elaborated:

I'm not talking about anyone in particular. I'm talking about all of them. I mean, it's like everybody's so naked. It's like put it away. We know you've got it. I got it too. I've taken it off for -- I've taken it out here and there. And I'm not necessarily judging. I'm just saying sometimes it's nice to play that card, but also it's nice to play other cards. And I know I have that sexy card in my deck, but I don't always have to use that card.
Well-put. And a message we really could stand to hear so much more often. In a time when women see hyper-sexualized, exploitative messages from porn (just watch Don Jon or the documentary Sexy Baby to see what I mean) and even mainstream media, commercials, billboard ads, Facebook ads, it's way too easy to believe we must equate our self-worth with how good we look naked. And that's completely unacceptable.

Like it or not, stars who rely on the sexy card all the freakin' time and have nothing else to offer are sending a messed-up message to the world. Like Katy, I agree there's a time and a place for "taking it out," as she puts it. Ha. It shouldn't be so constant. Otherwise, where's the mystique?! And without mystique, where's the glamour?.

Breaking: Powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake hits New Zealand triggering tsunami alert.

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked New Zealand’s South Island on Sunday, reports CNN. The quake’s epicentre was about 50 km (31 miles) northeast of Christchurch city, the same area devastated by a temblor on 2011. People near the island’s east coast have been warned to move to higher ground, New Zealand Civil Defense said on Twitter. The quake struck the Pacific nation at a depth of 23 kilometers (14.2 miles), the USGS said and at least three aftershocks hit near South Island, USGS said. The quake was strongly felt in Christchurch, Wellington, Nelson, Marlborough, Taranaki, Hamilton and Auckland.

Christchurch was devastated by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in 2011, which killed 185 people and injured thousands. It reduced swathes of the city’s historic area to rubble. “The land has been very peaceful for many, many months. So this is bringing back all the rare memories,” Chet Wah, owner of Designer Cottage B&B in Christchurch, told CNN.

“I just checked with all the guests. They are alright. It is scary. It’s going to be a long night.”
Christchurch has a population of over 340,000 people, according to the most recent government census.

In Christchurch, hotels and occupied buildings in the CBD have been evacuated, reports Stuff.co.nz.

Many people are standing around in the middle of the street, away from buildings, calling people to let them know they’re fine. Some people are venturing back inside, because nobody seems to be enforcing the evacuations.

Christchurch student April Clarke said she was unable to get hold of friends in Waiau, close to the quake’s epicentre.

“There are six people in Waiau nobody can get hold of.”

Despite calling and messaging, nobody could get hold of them, she said.

In Wellington, hundreds of people are on the streets as building alarms sound and fire trucks and police cars head around the CBD. Windows in some high-rise office buildings have smashed, while plaster and masonry appears to have fallen down from some buildings. Near Civic Square, hotel guests huddled together in bathrobes while they waited for their buildings to be cleared.

New Zealand is regularly hit by earthquakes as it sits in a “collision zone” between the Indo-Australian and Pacific tectonic plates. It is part of the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire,” where many earthquakes and volcano eruptions occur.

Wendy [f] Disturbing fast food restaurant secrets.

Disturbing fast food restaurant secrets.

Fast food is disgusting, and is made out of 10 percent foodstuffs, 90 percent fillings found on the floor. Even hardcore Big Mac fans know that. But you know what's really disturbing about fast food places? Everything else they do. Some of their corporate practices are shadier than a thousand Eminems, and if pink slime and e-coli aren't enough to convince you to grill your own d*mn burgers from now on, nothing will.

the McDonald Brothers were put out of business...by a McDonalds

The story of McDonalds founder Ray Kroc is basically that of a petulant bully who wins. According to a Daily Mail interview with the McDonald family, after Kroc convinced the McDonald brothers to let him franchise their restaurant, he immediately began plotting their demise. He hated how he couldn't change things at his McDonalds without a thumbs-up from the brothers (who were, technically, his bosses). So he offered to buy the company outright. When the brothers asked for $2.7 million plus 0.5 percent of future company royalties, Kroc apparently snapped, throwing a baby tantrum in his office and cursing the McDonald family for being so greedy as to ask for money. How dare they?

Kroc eventually paid, but then immediately cut the brothers out of their royalty deal, which would've earned them hundreds of millions of dollars. In addition, Kroc hated that the brothers still ran their old restaurant under a new name (Big M). So, he opened up another McDonalds nearby. Within a few years, Big M was no more. Ray Kroc had achieved his dream of owning a hugely successful company, plus another dream of guaranteeing his old partners would never work again. Fitting punishment for the crime of annoying him once.

Jimmy John's makes regular employees sign non-compete contracts

If you leave a fast food job and aren't, say, the CEO, you can easily get another low-paying job elsewhere. Unless, sadly, you work at Jimmy John's, the popular sandwich shop best known for never having one of its mascots wind up in prison. As revealed by the Huffington Post, when JJ's hires you to slap turkey on rye for eight bucks an hour, they force you to sign a non-compete contract that bars you from working for any competitors for two years after you leave. By competitors, they mean any company that makes more than ten percent of their money off of sandwiches, and is less than three miles away from any Jimmy John's, anywhere. Since sandwiches aren't exactly an exotic dish enjoyed only by the hippest of the hipsters, and since there are about 2,300 JJs worldwide, with more coming every year, exiled Jimmy Johns workers are pretty much screwed.

You're probably wondering what justification Jimmy John's could possibly have for handcuffing minimum-wage workers like this. Well, join the club: the company refuses to give a reason, probably because every possible reason would be the dirt worst, and they know this.

Colonel Sanders hated what KFC did to his recipes

Kentucky Fried Chicken can have every comedian cosplay Colonel Sanders, but it doesn't change how the real Colonel Sanders despised KFC for betraying everything he stood for. Sanders, having made his name on delicious chicken and gravy, sold KFC in 1964. But to the bottom-line-obsessed new owners, his recipes were terrible for mass production. As one executive put it, "The Colonel's gravy was fantastic but you had to be a Rhodes Scholar to cook it." So they dumbed down the recipes, and Sanders (who remained with KFC as a goodwill ambassador) was incensed by this. He'd regularly visit KFCs and loudly dismiss the gravy's taste with "[it] ain't fit for my dogs" and the chicken as "a d*mn fried doughball stuck on some chicken."

KFC, for its part, treated the badwill ambassador like, well, a doddering old grandpa. As Vice President John Fox patronized, "He has been doing this forever. It comes and goes. The colonel is just a very independent-minded individual." Eventually, both sides sued the other: Sanders sued for misusing his image, and the company sued for slander. Post-settlement, Sanders promised to never bash the company again, a promise he simply couldn't keep. Because when corporate hacks take dime-store Crayolas to your culinary Da Vinci, you tend to stay cranky.

Pizza Hut's "delivery fee" is probably a tip-slashing scam.

Have you ever seen the "delivery fee" on your Pizza Hut bill, assumed it went to the delivery person (hence the name), and adjusted your tip accordingly? It appears you may have been bamboozled by a company greedier than you could ever imagine. According to an August 2015 lawsuit filed by two former delivery drivers—one of whom worked for the company for seven years—the Hut's "delivery fees" don't actually go to the delivery people, but to Pizza Hut itself. So if you order a $10 pizza with a $2 fee, you're paying Pizza Hut $12 for that pizza. And if you don't tip, thinking $2 is already 20 percent, the driver gets nothing and the company gets everything. Good luck getting service with a smile after that snafu.

If that's not enough, Pizza Hut has yet another delivery fee lawsuit to deal with, this one a class-action filed by a former customer who claims the company overtaxes its product by secretly taxing both the delivery fee and the food. If true, that would be super-illegal and make the company look even worse than it does whenever you take a bite and sadly remember "oh yeah…it's Pizza Hut."

Wendy's fired the "Where's The Beef" lady for the worst reasons.

You'd think it would be impossible for even a fast food company to turn the brief employment of a sweet old lady into a shady facepalm-fest. And yet, here are are, documenting what Wendy's did to Clara Peller, the old lady who sassily demanded of Wendy's' competitors, "where's the beef?" This made her a minor celebrity and even got her onto WrestleMania, where she narrowly lost the WWF Championship to Hulk Hogan. Or rang the timekeeper's bell, either one.

Despite her helping them earn gobs of money, Wendy's apparently paid Peller peanuts; she reportedly earned $317 a day for her first commercial, and not much more for her second one, though Wendy's claims she made half a million. But cheating an old person and probably lying about it paled to what happened next. Peller, needing money, appeared in a Prego meat sauce ad and claimed "I found it! I really found it!" Wendy's, showcasing the family-friendly warmth it's known for, fired her. Why? Because as Wendy's put it, the commercial ”infers that Clara found the beef at somewhere other than Wendy's restaurants,' and this apparently damaged the multi-billion-dollar brand that gets richer everyday somehow. Who knew the secret ingredient in those delicious shakes of theirs was pure.

The old adage is true: You are what you eat. That's why on some days you end up feeling more like a cream-filled Twinkie than the lean cut of beef you aspire to be.

But you probably already know that. That's why, like all of us, you're most likely trying to clean up your act and start eating healthy. But the truth is, that's just not enough. Because if you're scarfing down salads made of iceburg lettuce, tossing back cold-pressed juices, and eating bananas by the bunch, you're eating healthy-ish—but you're not eating smart.

To get the shrink-wrapped abs and three-dimensional arms, the lightning-quick brain and unquenchable libido you need to make every bite of food you put in your mouth count. That means building your diet around the most potent, nutrient-dense, disease-fighting, muscle-growing foods around.

But where do you start? And what foods are the absolute fittest? To find out, we decided to put some of the nation's top nutritionists to the test.

First, we polled 40 of the country's most respected food experts—registered dietitians, college nutrition professors, and authors—asking them each: What are the 10 most important foods every guy should include in his diet for maximum fitness? Then, as the results rolled in, we ranked our experts' recommendations.

We not only tell you which foods made the list, but how much of each you should eat on a weekly basis. So read on to see how you can elevate your nutrition.

Almonds

82 calories per 1/2-oz serving

Eat 3 servings per week

Although almonds are loaded with healthy unsaturated fats—as well as protein, fiber, and vitamin E—almonds are great for your heart, digestive system, and skin. some guys avoid them because they're so calorie-dense. But that's a mistake. Gary Fraser, Ph.D., a professor of medicine at Loma Linda University in California, studied folks who added two ounces of almonds to their diet on a regular basis. Turns out they had no significant weight change. "Since nuts are such a hard food, it appears that a significant amount of their calories are never absorbed into the body," he says. To work more almonds into your diet, try keeping a bag of dry-roasted or lightly seasoned almonds in your desk drawer at work-and snack on a handful rather than hitting the vending machine. You can also blend almond butter into smoothies, or use it in place of peanut butter to make an, uh, AB&J sandwich.

Wendy [f] Baking Soda vs. Baking Powder: Here's the Difference

Baking Soda vs. Baking Powder: Here's the Difference

It’s no wonder that baking soda and baking powder are easily confused, considering their similar names and appearance, plus the fact that they’re often used within the same recipe. But when it comes to their individual uses, it’s important to know the difference—lest you wind up with a minor baking disaster on your hands.

So let’s break it down:

Baking Soda

According to Susan Reid, chef and food editor of Sift magazine, baking soda is a base mineral, which, when combined with something acidic, produces carbon dioxide. “Usually this happens in liquid, and the results you get are bubbles,” says Reid. “Think of the volcanoes you see at every 5th grade science fair. Those bubbles can lift stains or act as a surfactant (meaning they will clean things).”

In other words: baking soda can do some pretty magical things.

Typically, you’ll see the ingredient pop up in baking recipes that also include acidic ingredients like molasses, maple syrup, lemon juice, and pumpkin. The reason it’s there is to act as a leavener, to help the dough rise. “Recipes using baking soda often bake up darker, and are more crisp, than those without,” adds Reid. But be warned, “too much baking soda in a recipe can give it a bitter, soapy taste.”

When it comes to cleaning, you can use baking soda for pretty much anything you can imagine, from unclogging drains to deodorizing the carpet. It’s even been used to remove heel marks from linoleum floors.

As for what it’s made of? That may surprise you: Baking soda is basically ground up rock, according to Reid, and as long as it stays cool and dry, it lasts indefinitely. (Hence why your mom’s had the same box of it in her pantry since what seems like 1975.)

Baking Powder

Baking powder on the other hand, is actually a combination of baking soda plus another acid, in the presence of an inert stabilizer (a fancy term for an inactive ingredient that keeps the mixture from reacting), which is often a bit of cornstarch. What that means: Everything stays inert in the mixture until liquid is added, which allows the soda and acid to combine to produce carbon dioxide (which look like bubbles to the naked eye). This process is what gives baking powder its lifting power in recipes—without which, you’d have some sad-looking biscuits on your hands.

But just like baking soda, Reid says baking powder can lose its lifting power over time if it’s not stored in a cool dry place. If you can, keep it free from humid conditions, since extra moisture in the air can allow the reaction between acid and base to happen.

Pay close attention to the label when you buy a new box, since there are actually two different kinds of baking powders out there: single-acting and double-acting. Single-acting powders react fully when you combine them with another liquid. But double acting baking powders work in two stages: Once when combined with a liquid, and again when combined with heat. “Since the balance of the base (soda) and acid is calculated for you, it’s easier to get a final product that has no aftertaste when used in proper amounts,” says Reid.

Still not sure you’ll remember the difference between these two ingredients? Reid has a quick trick: Think baking soda = single ingredient. Baking powder = poof in the oven.

Wendy [f] Whatever You Do This Thanksgiving, Just DO NOT Wash Your Turkey

Whatever You Do This Thanksgiving, Just DO NOT Wash Your Turkey

We understand the instinct. Poultry sometimes feels like it could use a little wash ― it can have a somewhat slimy quality to it. But whatever you do this Thanksgiving, absolutely DO NOT wash your bird.

According to the USDA, rinsing your turkey will not get rid of unwanted bacteria ― that is virtually impossible. Actually, washing it can increase the chance of spreading bacteria. This is because water that splashes from the bird onto countertops or other surfaces spreads the bacteria and creates a real possibility for cross contamination.

“The risk of cross-contamination through washing poultry is far greater than shoving it in the oven without washing it, which makes the risk almost zero,” Fergus Clydesdale, head of the food science department at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, told The New York Times.

The best way to get rid of bacteria on turkey is to cook it. And to be sure to wash your hands well after you handle it. The USDA recommends washing your hands for 20 seconds with soap, under warm water. If any surface of your kitchen comes in contact with raw poultry, like countertops and sinks, wash the them with hot, soapy water. Just never wash the bird.

Wendy [f] 9 High-Protein Snacks You Should Always Have At Your Desk

9 High-Protein Snacks You Should Always Have At Your Desk

Turn those file cabinets into snack drawers.

At your desk is the perfect place to store tons of snacks. Why? Well, for one, you've got lots of drawers to use. But also, when you're prone to mid-morning and late afternoon hunger (as we all are), having healthy munchies nearby is extremely helpful. Because if you have a granola bar or apple within arm’s length, you can sate your belly without messing up your workflow—and you won’t need to resort to vending machine garbage that’ll leave you with a sugar crash.
The best kind of snacks to keep on hand are those that are high in protein. This kind of grub can tide you over between breakfast and lunch, can give you an energy boost when you're really feeling that 3 P.M. slump, and can keep you full until it's time for dinner. As for the specific snacks you should stock up on, registered dietitians have nine great recommendations. Most of them are shelf-stable, but a handful of them will need to be refrigerated—so make a little room for yourself in the office fridge. Now say goodbye to workday hunger and hello to hella productivity.

1 Roasted edamame

This high-protein snack is also high and fiber, and Amy Gorin, M.S., R.D.N., owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in Jersey City, NJ, is a huge fan. “I like to keep dry-roasted edamame on hand because it’s an excellent protein source that is also easy to store.”

2 KIND snacks

Both Lindsey Pine, M.S., R.D., owner of Tasty Balance Nutrition, and Gorin highly recommend KIND snacks. In particular, Pine is a fan of their Nuts & Spices Bars because they’re a little sweet, but still totally healthy. She says “some of them are even drizzled with dark chocolate!”
Gorin prefers their Peanut Butter Whole Grain Clusters, which provide 10 grams of protein per half-cup serving. “I can easily store this item at my desk, because it has a resealable top,” she adds.

3 Pumpkin seeds

“Pumpkin seeds are a tasty, crunchy snack that have about 8 grams of protein per ounce,” Gorin tells SELF. “I like eating them as is or using them as a topping on plain cottage cheese or Greek yogurt, with a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg.”

4 Apples and nut butter packets

Not only is this snack a great one to keep at your desk, but it’s also perfect pre-workout grub. So if you’re headed from your office to the gym, you don’t need to make an extra stop to power up. Pine prefers to opt for the single serve packets of nut butter (rather than spooning out of a jar) because they’re better for monitoring portion control.

5 Jerky

“Jerky isn’t just made out of beef anymore,” Pine tells SELF. In fact, she says that many brands now sell bison, pork, poultry, and even salmon jerky. As we know, meat is an excellent source of protein, and jerky is totally shelf stable. Basically, this is the perfect snack to keep at your desk.

6 Cottage cheese

This snack is one that will need to be refrigerated, but Gorin says if your office does have a fridge, it’s worth loading up on. “Cottage cheese is one of my favorite protein-rich foods to eat when I need an afternoon energy boost.” She likes Muuna Lowfat Plain Cottage Cheese because “it’s very creamy and the single-serve container provides 19 grams of protein.” SELF staffers also love Good Culture’s sweet and savory flavors.

7 Instant oatmeal packets

Pine recommends this snack with one minor caveat. “Many instant oatmeals contain loads of added sugar,” she explains. To avoid ending up with a sugar-packed brand, she recommends double checking that ingredients list before you buy.

8 Hard-boiled eggs

If you have access to a fridge in your office, Gorin recommends stocking it with hard-boiled eggs as a single egg has about 6 grams of protein. She’ll either eat them plain, or slice them in half and sprinkle them with black pepper or paprika (two other ingredients you can totally keep at your desk).

9 Roasted chickpeas

“These are one of my favorite office foods to keep on hand,” Pine tells SELF, “Because they are a perfect crunchy snack that’s packed with protein and fiber.” Think of them as chips that will actually fill you up.

Wendy [f] The secret to cooking the best steak ever

The secret to cooking the best steak ever

For something as simple as cooking a steak should be, we sure love to overcomplicate it. Should they be room temperature or cold? Butter or oil? Pan-fried or grilled or finished in the oven?

The Sporkful podcast recently introduced another way to be self conscious about your steak — does it sound right?

On the episode, J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, author of “The Food Lab: Better Home Cooking Through Science,” argued that ensuring your steak is making the right sound, a powerful sizzle, is key to making it taste good. The idea is that sound is an indicator that the Maillard reaction is taking place, the chemical reaction that makes caramelization and searing happen.

So, do you need to add this to your checklist of steak concerns?

"Although sound plays a role in the perfection of a steak, the primary senses remain sight and touch. Our chefs would not recommend cooking a steak entirely on sound," says Lesa Sorrentino of Perry's Steakhouse. Sound can be an important factor — if you’ve got sight and touch under control.

"For the home cooks who are cooking in a pan, sound can be a factor, because it indicates if your pan is at the proper temperature," says Chef Craig Koketsu at Quality Meats, who is participating in Food & Wine's Meatopia this year.

"For example, if you don’t hear anything when you initially put the steak in the pan, it means you need much more heat."

However, both Koketsu and Chef Joe Gerardi of Perry’s Steakhouse say that visual cues are the most important.

"When you notice the ring of crust forming around the edges and moving up or down the side of the steak, that’s a great indicator you are cooking your steak correctly," says Gerardi.

To achieve that crust, don’t move the steak during the cooking process, until you see that crust forming around the sides. "Sight, touch, and smell will give the cook much more information" than sound, agrees Koketsu.

Ultimately, both chefs had similar advice on how to cook a great steak at home: Season heavily with salt and pepper, sear it for a few minutes on each side in a heavy pan, and let it rest before serving. And if you want to know if that pan is hot enough, yes, check for the sizzle.

Celebrities React: Sharon Jones Dead At 60

Celebrities are mourning Sharon Jones, who died at age 60 on Friday. See stars’ tribute tweets below.

Jones’ death was announced in a statement on her official website. The message reads, “We are deeply saddened to announce that Sharon Jones has passed away after a heroic battle against pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by her loved ones, including the Dap-Kings.” It goes on to say, “Thank you for your prayers and thoughts during this difficult time,” and requests that donations be made to charities in lieu of flowers.

As Gossip Cop reported at the time, Jones’ cancer diagnosis was revealed in 2013, with it being said she was suffering from bile duct cancer. The medical crisis forced her to cancel an upcoming tour and postpone a new album with the Dap-Kings. Jones said her disease was “operable and curable,” but she later discovered the cancer was actually affecting her pancreas and liver.

She underwent surgery and chemotherapy, and revealed in the fall of 2015 that her cancer had returned. Her tragic passing comes nearly a year after Jones participated in “Michael Buble’s Christmas In Hollywood” special. And this past February, she joined FKA Twigs and Iggy Pop for a benefit concert.

Now many in the music community and beyond are paying tribute to the iconic performer. Whoopi Goldberg tweeted, “The fabulous Sharon Jones has passed tonight she & her band The DapKings made great music together & she sang her 6utt off. Condolences RIP.” Nile Rogers expressed, “#RIPSharonJones – You are incredible and mighty. Condolences to your family.”

On Instagram, Questlove said, “Thank You Sharon. Thank You. #2016.” Back on Twitter, Beth Behrs wrote, “She’s singing ‘his eye is on the sparrow’ with the angels tonight. Gutted by the loss of Sharon Jones.” Leon Bridges posted, “Rest In Peace to the beautiful black queen Sharon Jones.”

“RIP Sharon Jones. What a wonderful woman in every way,” tweeted Andy Cohen. Roseanne exclaimed, “Hail Hail, a genius has vacated this realm, RIP @sharonjones my favorite singer.” Victoria Justice posted, “RIP Sharon Jones,” and told her followers, “If you don’t know who she is, I urge you to watch ‘Miss Sharon Jones,’ her fiery spirit & amazing talent inspires.”

Thank you for everything.” Hayley Williams remarked, “My heart is broken. This year is so sad. Sharon Jones, thx for inspiring me for so long. Your voice/energy will echo in my heart forever.”

“Sharon Jones had one of the most magnificent, gut-wrenching voices of anyone in recent times. She’ll be so missed. Too sad x,” shared Mark Ronson. Colin Hanks announced, “Rest in Peace Sharon Jones. I’m gonna cut a rug in your honor.” Ken Jennings also said, “I’m listening to Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings right now & I hope you are too.”

Chandler Riggs Leaving ‘Walking Dead’? His Dad’s Cryptic Message Freaks Fans Out.

Whoa. ‘The Walking Dead’ fans dug up an interesting post from Chandler Riggs AKA Carl’s dad on Nov. 17, and it has them nervous that the actor might be ready to bow out of the show! See the message, and fans’ panicked reactions to it, right here.

Chandler Riggs, 17, has been on The Walking Dead since the very beginning, and we’ve basically watched him grow up on-screen. His dad William was feeling a little sentimental about that on Nov. 17, when he shared a touching message to his son on Facebook.

“7 year contract completed!” he said. “Grateful to AMC, Cast & Crew, TWD fan base and especially Chandler for always being 100% dedicated. Whether it was getting up at 4AM, working in the freezing cold past 2AM, leaving his friends and carefree kiddom behind, scrambling to make up missed schoolwork, he has done it without complaint and always made me proud & amazed to be his dad!” Aww so sweet!

We loved seeing his dad get all mushy, but some fans took the “completed” comment and graduation-esque speech to mean that Chandler’s time as the beloved Carl is coming to a close. However, we wouldn’t start freaking out just yet. Carl hasn’t died in the comics, and starting TV contracts are regularly 7 years. He could very easily start a new one, and after Glenn and Abraham’s shocking deaths on the season premiere, we don’t think they’ll take another major character anytime soon, but you never know! Chandler did get accepted to Auburn College on Nov. 6, as he revealed to thrilled fans in a tweet. Maybe he is ready to move on and focus on his education, and we couldn’t blame him.
Plenty of fans definitely have their concerns, rushing to Twitter to demand answers from Chandler.

Wendy [f] The best spices for your health

The best spices for your health

For many of us, eating healthy can be quite the challenge. Yes, we know things like salt, sugar, and butter are not necessarily good for our bodies, but let's face it: many of the superfoods out there aren't synonymous with great taste. We're looking at you, kale.

Luckily, food doesn't have to taste bland to be healthy. In fact, there's a plethora of herbs and spices you can use to add some major flavor to your cooking. What's even better is many of them actually have a ton health benefits. As nutrition adviser Wendy Bazilian, RD, told Fitness Magazine: "Technically, spices are vegetables in concentrated form. Like veggies, they contain thousands of healthy phytonutrient compounds, including antioxidants."Taste and nutritional value? Now we're talking. Here are seven healthy spices to add your cooking arsenal.

Ginger

A staple ingredient in Asian and Indian cuisine, ginger has also served medicinal purposes for centuries. In fact, ginger has long been used by cultures around the world to treat nausea and other digestive problems. Some studies have also shown that ginger may help decrease the risk of certain health issues like diabetes and heart disease.

Ginger root can be consumed fresh, and is an easy way to add flavor to soups, rice, or other meat dishes without adding in extra calories. In fact, steep a couple of slices of fresh ginger in hot water and add some lemon and honey for a delicious ginger tea.

Turmeric

Even though it's been around for centuries, turmeric has gained quite a bit of popularity in recent years. Some have even said this spice is "the most effective nutritional supplement in existence."

Turmeric has been used to treat everything from liver disease to ringworm. It's also a natural anti-inflammatory that, according to the American Cancer Society, has proven in studies to shrink tumors and boost the effectiveness of chemotherapy.

Reap the health benefits of turmeric by adding it to your soups, rice, or vegetable side dishes. You can even blend some into your morning smoothie for a healthy treat.

Cinnamon

Oh, cinnamon. How we love you in our Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Lucky for us, we don't have to wait until the leaves turn to enjoy the health benefits — and, may we add, delicious taste — of this favorite fall spice.

Rich in antioxidants that protect the body against harmful free radicals, cinnamon is a great addition to your morning oatmeal, tea, or favorite fruit. Cinnamon apples, anyone?

And if you still need another reason to add more cinnamon to your life: this spice has been known to lower cholesterol, blood sugar, and reduce the risk of Alzheimer's.

Chili powder

Spicy food lovers, rejoice. There may be health benefits to cooking with all that chili powder, after all. Made from the chili pepper, a native to Central and South America, this spice is known for its hot and zesty flavor, which makes it a popular ingredient in tacos, enchiladas, stews, and casserole dishes.

Chili powder is a great source of Vitamin A and C, as well as beta carotenoids, which block the production of free radicals that cause things like rheumatoid arthritis and heart disease. Chili powder also stimulates endorphins, acting as a natural pain killer.

Oregano

Hugely popular in Italian cuisine, oregano is a wonderfully versatile herb for both cooking and therapeutic purposes.
Oregano contains carvacol and thymol, both powerful antimicrobials. In fact, studies have shown that oils from the oregano could effectively kill Candida and the superbug MRSA. It's also been found to effectively treat upper respiratory infections, UTIs, yeast infections, and nail fungus.
Oregano can be used dry or fresh. Plants are extremely easy to grow indoors, giving you a year-round supply of all its healthy benefits.

Garlic

It turns out that garlic isn't just good for warding off vampires. In fact, this plant was used in ancient Greece to treat an array of medical conditions.

A close relative to shallots and leeks, garlic is rich in fiber, magnesium, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin C. Garlic has also been known to boost the immune system, with one study finding it reduced the risk of cold and flu by up to 61 percent.

What's even better: it tastes delicious. These days, garlic is one of the most popular cooking ingredients, used in everything from savory pasta sauces to juicy steaks and chicken. In that case, bring on the garlic.

Rosemary

Native to the Mediterranean, rosemary is a fragrant herb closely related to mint and lavender. In ancient times, rosemary was used to reduce muscle pain and boost the immune system.

Besides being a popular cooking ingredient in dishes like chicken, rosemary is also widely used by those who enjoy essential oils. In fact, certain studies show that components in rosemary may help improve memory and concentration.

The Way You Cut an Onion Actually Affects How It Tastes

It can be stronger or milder, depending on your slice
Everyone knows that cutting onions makes you cry, but there’s more to the slice than meets the eye . . .
An onion will taste differently depending on how it’s cut.

Thanks to our friend Kenji López-Alt at Serious Eats, we learned that if you slice an onion from end to end, it will have a milder flavor than if you slice it across the middle. That’s because cutting an onion releases flavor compounds, and how you slice—with or against the grain—releases more or fewer compounds.

When you cut end to end, or with the grain, you cause less damage and release fewer compounds than when you slice through the middle. Slicing through the middle, or against the grain, causes a greater disruption and leaves you with a stronger, more pungent taste.
So the next time you go to slice rings for your burger, don’t forget you’re also signing up for a stronger flavor. If you want something less intense, cut it the other way. And with that, you’ve peeled back yet another layer of the onion.
