Niantic has announced the upcoming addition of a feature that will reward consistent Pokemon players with better odds for catching rare Pokemon.

On the Pokemon Go website, Niantic explains that medals awarded for catching set numbers of type-specific Pokemon will now make other Pokemon of that type easier to catch.

For example, catching fire-type Pokemon will increase the chances of catching a Charmander. It's not clear if this means you're more likely to encounter more rare Pokemon, or simply have less chance of them running away and making you feel all sad when you do stumble across one.

Here's a gallery of the types of medals and catch bonuses you can expect:

"If a Pokémon has multiple types, your bonus will be the average of your bonuses for each type", Niantic clarified. "For example, Pidgey is both Normal and Flying type. Your bonus in this case would be the average of your Normal-type and Flying-type bonuses.

Niantic has not announced when the update containing the new feature would arrive, nor whether those who had already earned these medals will be given the catch bonuses for them (although this seems likely).

There's a good reason for Niantic to keep drip-feeding new features - Pokemon Go is reportedly still making over $2 million a day, even after a sharp drop in activity.
