At a point in one’s career as a musician, one must come to the level where he is able to write and compose his/her own songs. The joy of music is buried deep in the art of being able to create your own songs and music.
Look deep into your own soul and pull out life experiences and write them down in your own unique way, that’s what makes for a good song writer. Many singers don’t write songs not because they don’t have the ability to, but because many are lazy, and don’t want to undergo some soul searching.
What is a song?
A Song is a short story fashioned musically. A good song is short, but tells us the story perfectly well.
However, not all songs are commercial, commercial songs are songs that has a wide mass appeal and can be appreciated not just by you, family and friends, but can be appreciated by a wide audience as well.
THREE PARTS OF A SONG
1. THE LYRICS: Remember that a great lyric starts with a feeling. It is then properly arranged and structured, so that the listener feels the same thing that the writer feels/felt.
When writing down, make up your mind on what you want to write. If you are writing a song with a break-up theme, it’s quite disastrous if, halfway through the song, you start talking of nigeria’s current situation. Pick one song and expand on it, you can visit it from different angles, but never killing it with a totally different idea.
Also don’t waste words. This is very common in our Nigerian songs. You don’t need to be repetitive in your words, it can be painful to the hearing.
Don’t tell a story with your song in the literal sense of that sentence. Instead your music should show us the story and draw your audience into the picture.
2 THE MUSIC: The music component refers to the melody lines, the rhythmic structure, the chord progression, the beat and overall orchestration.
Some song writers are good at creating both the lyrics and music at the same time, however some are more gifted and tilted at one part more than the other.
If you are good at writing lyrics then get someone who has more musical skill, to be able to put your lyrics rightly into music.
TIPS FOR COMPOSING GOOD MUSIC.
BEFORE YOU START HAVE A VISION OF WHAT YOU WANT FROM THE START TO THE FINISH.
WORK WITH AN INSTRUMENT IF YOU CAN-IT WILL SUGGEST IDEAS TO YOU ABOUT CHORDS AND MAYBE ALSO MELODY.
THE GENRE OF MUSIC YOU’RE WRITING IN MOST TIMES WILL DETERMINE SO MANY FACTORS ABOUT THE MUSICAL CONCEPT.
KEEP SINGING AS YOU GO AROUND THE HOUSE, THE MUSIC WOULD SUBTLY CHANGE AND EVOLVE AD YOU GO.
3. THE SINGER: A song is nothing without a singer, only you, the singer can give a song it’s true meaning. Professional singers do this by engaging their intellect, interpretation of the song, expressive singing and audience adaptability.
So go ahead, write on your song…. Be expressive, be free!!!!
