An 80-year-old man accused of killing his wife as part of an allegedly mutual plan for both of them to commit suicide was arrested Friday and charged with homicide.Rostraver Township Police Chief Gregory Resetar said Edward Friday slit his wrist and attempted to overdose on pain pills after he and 82-year-old Wilma Friday agreed to commit suicide May 22 at their Cedar Hills Boulevard home.Investigators wrote in a search warrant affidavit that the couple wasn't chronically ill but decided they had lived long enough and were ready to die. Police say Wilma Friday took a kitchen knife and attempted to slit her throat. When she was unable to, police said Edward Friday took the knife and cut her neck. Edward Friday told police she put her hands up to stop him and he stopped cutting. When police asked Edward Friday if he knew he was killing Wilma Friday, he said, "Yes. I was going to kill her then myself."
As Wilma Friday laid dying in bed, police said Edward Friday cut his wrist, took 20 pain pills and then walked outside. A neighbor saw him bleeding and was told what happened. The neighbor called police. "When the officers arrived, it was a pretty gruesome scene. There was profuse bleeding coming from the female," Resetar said. "It's a heartbreaking story but the scenario we have is very bizarre."Wilma Friday was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery. She died May 24. Edward Friday was taken to Monongahela Valley Hospital for treatment of his injuries, according to police."Their intentions were clear. They both wanted to die, and he attempted to make sure that she succeeded," Resetar said. "(He) walked away from the scenario without providing any assistance and without any intent to help her at that point." Resetar said the couple did not have children. Officers could not find any relatives in the area and were attempting to track down other family members.
